Near the end of June 2016 I started studying to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. I really wanted a portable snack to take with me that was higher in protein and still delicious. I saw Alton Brown make protein bars on an episode of Good Eats and was intrigued by the idea of using tofu in a protein bar.
The recipe for Alton Brown’s protein bars can be found here. I thought the episode of Good Eats from which this recipe comes was very interesting. Alton talks about some of the common ingredients in commercially produced snack bars, as well as why some of those ingredients (i.e. Palm Oil) are probably not that good for you. He also estimates the overall nutrition of all the recipes on the episode, which I also thought was interesting.
I really liked these bars. They were relatively easy to make and kept well through the following week. They contain some dried fruit, which I thought added texture and sweetness to what would have likely been a bland bar had it not been present. I would definitely consider making these again.
